Waingawa Solar Farm 4.7 MW
The Waingawa Solar Farm is a community-scale solar farm of 4.7 MW capacity, connected to Powerco’s local network, with consent granted in July 2023. The solar farm covers six hectares of an existing 12-hectare rural lifestyle farm in Waingawa, north of Carterton in the Wairarapa. The landowner can continue to graze small animals under the panels and the solar farm lease will supplement the family’s income from the farm.
Thousands of solar panels will track the movement of the sun across the day and the project will produce clean electrical energy, offsetting electricity imported into the Wairarapa region from fossil fuels. The solar farm will produce enough energy to power approximately 1000 homes and help to power the nearby timber mill.
